Tie Rod Ends Matter!

The tie rod is the most fundamental part of the steering system of a vehicle. Tie rods are usually consisting of a set of two inner ends and two outer ends. The tie rod conveys force from the center link or rack gear to the steering knuckle, thus causing the wheels to turn. The outer tie rod end may connect with an adjusting sleeve, which allows the length of the tie rod to be adjustable in determining a vehicle’s alignment angle.

Tie rod ends wear with use and over time. They should be inspected with each oil change service by a qualified technician. With excessive wear, tie rod ends can become loose and can develop an excessive play, which can be felt in the steering and handling of the vehicle. Worn tie rod ends can negatively impact a vehicle’s front end alignment, which will lead to excessive tire wear, possible front suspension problems and even loss of fuel economy.
